Stanford Ice Hockey wins its first game of the season 4-3 against Santa Rosa Junior College in a harrowing battle for a victory before the season closes. This game also was Senior Night and the team says goodbye to some of its most talented and committed players.
Â
Santa Rosa came out swinging with their first goal within the first minute of the game. However, Taden Horse responded quickly, putting a quick snapshot in the net just minutes later with assists from captain Joshua Shunk and recruit Jonathan Dumanski. The first period ended with one more Santa Rosa Goal after a failed power play during a poor line change.
Â
The second period was full of scoring chances: Stanford was able to put 31 shots on goal, so much that Santa Rosa's goalie was swapped at the half way point. Still, it seemed that there was just not enough to pull the team across the line to tie the game.
Â
But the Cardinal was not going to give up just yet. After an ice cut between the second and third period, players came back pumped up (some might even say buzzing). Joshua Shunk scored the tying goal from the defensive line at 18:13, which was quickly followed up with Taden shooting two more goals, earning him yet another hat trick for the season. (Goals assisted by Dumanski, Horse; Alexander Li; and Dumanski, Nicholas Daal). Cardinal played with confidence, confidence that their year of training and practice was about to finally pay off.
Â
However, Santa Rosa was able to sneak one last goal past the goalie, Genevieve Knowles with seven seconds on the clock! The game ended with a showdown as Taden Horse won the faceoff and gave Stanford the puck for the last few seconds to end the game on a W. The game finished with a short tribute to our graduating seniors Camilo Colorado, Nicholas Daal, Charles Joyner, Alexander Li, and Maroussia Walckiers.
Â
Stanford Ice Hockey thanks all their fans and supporters who came out for a great game of Friday Night hockey. We look forward to hard months of training ahead to bring more wins (and hopefully recruits) back on our home ice in San Jose.
