Meet Max Rosenthal: Ice Hockey’s Newest Head Coach

Stanford Ice Hockey welcomes Max Rosenthal in his inaugural season as Head Coach! Rosenthal was an assistant coach last year where he led skills drills for goalies Cameron Pennington and Genevieve Knowles and brought insight and energy to the coaching staff from both the bench and the crease as a practice goalie. His coaching combines skills development and hockey IQ in dynamic, practical, and fun practices.

Max brings a decade of coaching experience to Stanford. Although he specializes in goaltending development, having trained NHL/PWHL and Olympic goaltenders, he has served as Head Coach and Assistant Coach for AA/AAA teams with the San Jose Jr. Sharks since 2020. Rosenthal last played for the University of Pittsburgh where he received a Masters of Social Work, and he continues to serve as both a practice goalie and an Emergency Backup Goalie for the San Jose Sharks.

Max's coaching philosophy prioritizes creativity, communication, and community.

"Teams that focus on these qualities are able to adapt to a wider range of game situations while maintaining a cohesive style of play," he writes.

These values guide the Stanford Ice Hockey Program both on and off the ice as they aim to build a thriving Northern California collegiate hockey ecosystem. By creating a fun, competitive atmosphere where players look to support each other and give back, Max will help grow the game's presence on campus and nurture the talent already at Stanford. In addition, Max has emphasized the importance of greater service, embracing volunteership with girls, youth, and disabled hockey programs.

Stanford Ice Hockey aims to use this season to spur interest among the student body while creating a reputation as a fiercely competitive and welcoming group. As we increase the size and skill of our roster, the team looks to use this growth to join the West Coast Hockey Conference for the 2026-2027 season.

Max has a bold vision for the future of hockey at Stanford:

"Not only will we look to field a full 20 player roster in 2026-2027, but we will build our fan base and presence in the greater community so that entrance into Division I NCAA can be considered in the long-term future."
