In a thrilling matchup between two winless teams, Stanford University emerged victorious, claiming a resounding 13-1 win against the University of California, Santa Cruz at Sharks Ice in San Jose, California.
The Cardinal, hungry for their first win of the season, showcased an impressive performance, breaking a six-game losing streak that haunted them at the close of the previous year.
The game kicked off with freshman forward
Thomas Sitzmann setting the tone just 2:29 into the first period, finding the net with assists from
Giulia Socolof and
Joshua Kim. Stanford's offense continued to dominate, reaching a commanding 6-0 lead by the end of the second period.
Sophomore defenseman
Mia Garvey made her mark on the game, scoring her first Cardinal goal early in the second period with a well-placed shot off a pass from
Joshua Kim.
Senior goalie
Cameron Pennington played a crucial role in Stanford's success, maintaining a shutout until halfway through the third period when Banana Slug defenseman Emile Thibautt finally found the net with assists from Jacob Gilbert and Matthew Ower.
However, it was the grad students who stole the spotlight, as
Andrew Murtland and
Jack O'Rourke each recorded hat tricks. Murtland had a standout five-point game, while O'Rourke's seven-point performance, featuring three goals and four assists, showcased his offensive prowess in only his second game of the season.
With this decisive victory, the Cardinal now sets their sights on the next challenge. They are set to host Cal Lutheran in Fremont, California next weekend, seeking revenge after a heartbreaking loss that concluded the previous quarter. The win has undoubtedly injected a new sense of confidence and momentum into the Stanford squad as they look ahead to the rest of the season.
