Weekend Recap: Stanford Ice Hockey Sweeps California Lutheran University

Stanford Ice Hockey is undefeated in the new year at 3-0 after an outstanding weekend by sweeping the California Lutheran University Kingsmen at Sharks Ice Fremont.

In the opening game Friday night, senior captain Joshua Kim set the tone by scoring the first goal just 3 minutes and 49 seconds into the first period. Assists for this goal came from Thomas Sitzmann and Johan Carlstrom. The Cardinal continued to dominate with Luke Woodworth scoring his first goal at 16:45 in the second period, assisted by Taden Horse and Andrew Murtland.

The highlight of the night was Taden Horse's remarkable hattrick, where he scored three goals and provided two assists, including two shorthanded goals. Stanford emerged victorious with a convincing 9-3 win.

Saturday night's game saw the Cardinal maintaining control throughout, thanks in part to goalie Cameron Pennington's shutout first period. Despite facing adversity in the third period when Pennington had to play with a player stick, the team held their ground.

Freshman forward Thomas Sitzmann completed a spectacular hattrick, securing the win with an empty net goal. A confrontation ensued after Sitzmann's goal when frustrated CLU players and protective Stanford players came together to the right of the CLU bench. CLU players faced penalties, with Joel Klus receiving two minutes for roughing and Alex Steller getting a five-minute major and disqualification for fighting.

Stanford clinched the second game with a 7-5 victory, capping off a successful weekend and solidifying their position as an undefeated force in the new year.

The Cardinal's exceptional performances from key players and resilience in challenging situations showcase their determination and skill on the ice. The team continues to improve and is looking forward to the final three games of the season.

Stanford hosts University of California, Santa Cruz at Sharks Ice in San Jose on Saturday, January 27 at 1 p.m.
