West Coast 7s — Match 1
Stanford 36, Cal State Fullerton 0

Stanford Men's Rugby opened the West Coast 7s tournament with a win over Cal State Fullerton.

From the opening kickoff, a line break from sophomore Jordan De Sousa led to senior Taki Rifai setting up Carter Kling for a one-on-one battle, which the senior—in just his second year of rugby—won. Sophomore Jacob Bethell slotted the conversion to put the Cardinal ahead 7–0.

Bethell then created and finished his own line break, taking advantage of a disconnected Fullerton defense to extend the lead to 12–0.

To start the second half, a tackle by De Sousa dislodged the ball. Senior Leiden Brueschke gathered the loose ball and offloaded to De Sousa, who beat and bumped off defenders down the sideline. Bethell converted to give Stanford a 19–0 lead.

Brueschke scored the next try after a strong support line made him the recipient of a Julian Safos offload, bringing the lead to 24–0.

Despite a yellow card and pressure in its own red zone, Stanford found a way to extend the lead. Julian Safos spotted space in the backfield and chased his own kick, which bounced into his hands in stride. Patrick Kennedy added the conversion for a 31–0 advantage.

The final try came on the last play of the match, when a tackle by Kennedy knocked the ball loose. Kennedy retrieved it and sent a kick toward the corner for freshman Stevie Halprin. Halprin, playing in his first rugby match, gathered the kick and dove in for the final five points in the 36–0 victory.

Congratulations to De Sousa, Halprin, and Will Thomas on their first matches with Stanford Rugby. We look forward to seeing them on the pitch a lot this season with the Cardinal.
