Stanford Men's Rugby vs. UC Davis
Steuber Rugby Stadium
Stanford, Calif.
West Coast 7s — 3rd/4th Place Match
Stanford 22, American River College 0
After a close loss to Davis in the Semi Final of West Coast 7s, the Cardinal faced a strong American River College squad which featured a mix of speed and physicality. As they had done the entire day, the Cardinal elevated. They were playing like a team who had been training together for months, despite having only two trainings prior to the tournament with the quarter system start of the school year.
It was Jordan De Sousa first to score a 65 meter try after a brilliant strike line off of Max Burns. The prop dual showcased their attacking skills many times over on the day. Jacob Bethell added the conversion for the 7-0 lead midway through the 1st half.
The second score would come following a defensive scrum. The Cardinal dominated the scrum and scrumhalf Leiden Brueschke spotted the ball pop out. Before the defense could react, Breuschke had scooped up the ball and was sprinting down the sideline for a 50-meter try in the corner, putting the Cardinal up 12-0 at the half.
ARC ramped up the physicality in the second half, but repeat handling errors kept them on the back foot as the Cardinal maintained composure in their defense. Ninety seconds into the half, Carter Kling scooped up a mishandled ARC pass and the Cardinals were into the ARC half. After a penalty on ARC, Bethell moved the ball to Brueschke who found De Sousa with one to beat on the edge. The 6'9" sophomore from South Africa bumped off four defenders on his way to the tryzone, his second of the match.
The final try of the tournament resulted from another loose ball turnover from ARC. Arturo Kupfer collected the ball and broke threw only to be brought down just short of the tryline. Support was on his tail as Julian Safos cleared the ruck and Louis De Germay found Max Burns wide open for the walk-in try.
The Cardinal finished in 3rd place i the Challenger Division and a 3-1 record on the day. This is a strong foundation to head into the XV season as the Cardinals look to build their rookie class with these leaders at the front. Preseason will continue this Fall and conference play will kick off in January 2027.
