Stanford 21 - Iowa State 40
Bellingham, WA
2024 CRAA 7s National Championship
Stanford met Iowa State in the 2nd pool match on the day. In the first Cardinal possession of the game, Lucas Cavalieri wove through the defense to put the Cardinal up 7-0. Iowa State struck back quickly after working into the Cardinal half. Then, the Cardinal would lose Kasen Stephensen for 2 minutes with a yellow card. Iowa dominated possession in the first half as they put up another two tries. Stephensen reentered the match just before the half and Thane Brueschke launched a long ball over the top to the prop barreling down the sideline. Stephensen offloaded to Brueschke for the try, bringing the halftime score to 14-21.Â
The Cardinal knew this would come down to possession. Having been staved of possession the first half, having hands on the ball would be essential. Unfortunately, off the initial restart, the Cardinal contest was unsuccessful and Iowa State exploited a gap and was in for the 14-28 lead. Despite Cardinal defensive efforts, they would go down another two scores before a terrific team try with an Edsall fend to beat the last defender to dot it down for the try. Iowa State claimed the 21-40 victory over the Cardinal. The Cardinal are now 1-1 in pool play facing NCRC Selects next before ending the day with Oregon in the final pool match.Â
