Stanford with a convincing win over the NCRC Selects with one pool match remaining

Stanford 50 - NCRC Selects 0
Bellingham, WA
2024 CRAA 7s National Championship

Stanford met NCRC Selects in the 3rd pool match of the day. Off the initial restart, a well executed 2v1 on the edge by Taki Rifai sent Riley Elliot racing down the sideline for a 75 meter try. NCRC gained some momentum down the pitch, but Jeff Edsall and Thomas Adamo worked in tandem to turn the ball over. The possession would land in the hands of Faris Bdair who fended off a defender and charged through a gap to finish a 80 meter try. On a roll, Bdair poached the ball from NCRC and Kasen Stephensen sliced through the defense for the try. Taki Rifai would be the recipient of the next try after massive defense efforts by Elliot, Stephensen and Bdair. The Cardinal took a 28-0 lead at the half.

Bdair started the scoring off in the second half scoring off the initial kickoff.  Deep restarts by Thane Brueschke pressured NCRC and allowed the Cardinal to hone their defensive prowess. Under the pressure, NCRC kicked the ball away. Thomas Adamo raced back to gather the kick and found space through the defense. He broke through and raced towards the tryzone only to be high tackled just meters from the line. The Cardinal were awarded the penalty try for 7 points.

Next up, Bdair posted one of the fastest tries on the day off the restart kick. He gathered the high ball from Brueschke and broke two tackles to find the tryline. The Cardinal would take a 40-0 lead on the Bdair hat trick. The Cardinal dominated possession as the final try of the match went to Patrick Kennedy as he exploited a fragmented NCRC defense and scored between the sticks.

The match proved to be a pivotal game for the development of the Cardinal defensive structure and showcased the threat of their dynamic attack. The Cardinal would set their sights on the final pool match against Oregon to finish the day. This would undoubtedly be a defensive battle with ball possession critical to the outcome.
