Stanford Women's Rugby vs Fresno State
Kinesiology Field
Fresno, CA
Stanford 60 - Fresno 5
The Cardinal ventured to Fresno on Saturday to face the Bulldogs on their Senior day. The Cardinal kicked off in white jerseys for the first time this season, opening the scoring in the first minute of the game after the knock-on by the Bulldogs from the kick off. The scrum center set the platform for fullback Ahmyah Hicks '26 to come flying off the hip of flyhalf Cara Feit '26. The strong carry placed the Cardinal on the front foot and allowed scrumhalf Emma Cruz to play away quickly to Feit who was in for the try. A second try would come off the next restart as the Cardinal went on a 70 meter journey to the tryline where rookie winger Isabelle McNabb '26 scored her first on the day.Â
The next fifteen plus minutes remained scoreless as the possession changed quickly following handling errors and penalties at the ruck. The Bulldogs' kicking game was fairly quiet until that point when they kicked out of their 22 meters to relieve pressure. In the 20th, Hicks fielded the ball and found winger JourneyWashingtonhigh '25 who rounded the corner on the Bulldogs to dot it down between the sticks. Feit tallied the extra two points to take a 17 - 0 lead.Â
The Cardinal posted two more scores at the 30th and 36th minutes. The former at the hands of Sydney Davis '25. The latter was one for the highlight reel as a well orchestrated play between scrumhalf Emma Cruz '25 and Washingtonhigh showcased the speed of the winger who finished from 60 meters out. Feit with the extra two brought the score to 29 - 0 at the half.
The Cardinal recharged at halftime as the day heated up. Second half scores were seen by Chisa Ogaki '28 in the 44th minute, Emily Capstick '25 in the 53rd minute, Madisyn Cunningham in the 60th minute, Davis in the 70th minute, and finishing with McNabb for her second in the 75th minute. The second McNabb try was following a line break from Davis who flicked a pass out to the winger to the amazement of the fans and players looking on. Ogaki converted two of the second half tries to bring the score to 60 - 5 after Fresno scored in the last play of the game off a lineout.Â
Special recognition goes to senior Emma Cruz for her standout defensive effort in stealing at least a handful of Bulldogs' possessions at the tackle. Additionally, Washingtonhigh made critical tackles on the Bulldogs' fullback to limit the effectiveness of her speed and footwork. Captain Leila Wang Gaouette played a full 80-minute with the majority at prop and all around made a high impact at the point of contact on both ends of the ball. Renee Bertand '26 was credited for stealing a good number of Bulldogs' lineouts. Lastly, shoutout to Jana Gomri '25 in her first selection to a conference match line-up.
Stanford Women's Rugby will host Sacramento State next weekend for a Sunday match up on 3/9.Â
