The Cardinal hosted UC Santa Cruz under the lights and cloudburst of Friday night. Senior Sydney Davis '25 started off the scoring after a clearance kick by Santa Cruz in their own 22 meters did not travel far in the heavy rain and wind. The kick found the hands of Davis and after three phases, Davis would be awarded the try.Â
In the 18th minute, returner Madisyn Cunningham dotted down the try following the repeat efforts of the forward pack. With the rain pouring down, the Cardinal continued to keep the bodies close and the passing tight. In the 20th minute, the fans were met with the familiar sight of veteran Journey Wahsingtonhigh '25 striding down the sideline. The winger's try was credit to returning scrumhalf Emma Cruz '25 for her defensive prowess as Cruz stole the ball at the breakdown.Â
The Cardinal would hold Santa Cruz scoreless in the first half 22-0 as Davis landed her second try following a kick down field by Flyhalf Elena Abarca '26. The Slugs gathered the kick, but Davis was barreling down for the quick tackle, which landed her back on her feet to poach the ball and dive in from 5 meters out
In the second half, the rain refused to let up and the Cardinal followed suit. Four minutes into the half, Cunningham was in for their 2nd of the match, and freshman Chisa Ogaki '28 slotted the conversion in her first start at outside center for the Cardinal.
A few minutes later the Cardinal would find themselves with a midfield scrum at the Santa Cruz 22 meters. A strong carry by sophomore Kirsten Lees '27 of Northpoint, NY, landed the 8-man 10 meters out before being taken to ground. Quick ball out to the backs found junior Dominique Ruedaflores sliding in for the try.
On the final kickoff, the Cardinal got the ball to the edge and into the hands of Washingtonhigh who earned her 2nd try after a 70 meter sprint down the field. Junior Esha Gupta added the conversion to bring the final score to 41-0.Â

The Stanford Women's Rugby B-side kicked off the evening in the pouring rain with a roster of eleven new players in their first season on the Farm. The Cardinal started early with a try from Cara Feit '25, a graduate student from Chatham, NJ. The mechanical engineer crafted a looping play off of Junior Esha Gupta '26, receiving the ball back to enter the tryzone untouched. Gupta, a San Diego native, converted the try for an additional 2 points.Â
In the 10th minute, Hope Adhanom-Shipman '25 barreled through the Santa Cruz defense from 5 meters out. Adhanom-Shipman is a senior at Stanford, excelling in her rugby journey following a background in volleyball.Â
In the 13th minute, the Banana Slugs were penalized for obstruction. Rookie scrumhalf Vivian Studdert '28, a local from Stanford, CA, took a quick tap and attacked the retreating defense. Studdert then passed the ball to Feit through a gap who ran 35 meters for the try. Feit would convert the try herself bringing the score to 19-0.Â
Off the subsequent kickoff, Journey Washingtonhigh '25 scored a 60 meter try to bring the halftime score to 26-19.Â
The second half downpour of Bay Area rain did not lessen the scoring prowl of the Cardinal. The Cardinal started the half with a 50 meter try, followed by another try by Washingtonhigh. Once again it was Studdert's quick actions at a penalty that put Santa Cruz on the back foot. Studdert moved the ball to Chisa Ogaki who set Washingtonhigh free on the edge for her second of the match. Ogaki converted the score.Â
The Cardinal would finish with three more tries in the B-side match at the hands of returner Dominique Ruedaflores '26, and first year players Charlotte Courtois '27 and Isabelle McNabb '26.Â
