Stanford 33 – Cal Poly 21
Stanford Women's Rugby traveled to San Luis Obispo on Saturday to play Cal Poly for the second time this month. This match-up did not count toward conference standings but served as a competitive mid-season fixture as the Cardinal continue building toward their match-up vs. Cal in mid-March. The Mustangs won the previous game 31–29 on the final play of the game.
As expected, the match brought a familiar level of physicality and competitiveness consistently shown by the Mustangs. Cal Poly struck first at the two-minute mark after a line break and finish by No. 13 Liz Goethals, a familiar try leader for the Mustangs.
The Cardinal regrouped and answered in the fifth minute, capitalizing on a lineout drive following a Mustang penalty. It was No. 7 Sydney Davis '26 with the try and No. 10 Cara Feit '26 with the conversion.
The next dozen minutes featured a physical battle with constant changes in possession as the teams fought between the 22-meter lines. In the 18th minute, Cal Poly scored and converted after a double-digit phase possession in Stanford's half. The Cardinal responded in the 26th minute, capitalizing on another lineout drive for the try. The unconverted score brought the game to 14–12 in favor of Cal Poly.
In the 31st minute, a Cardinal scrum at the Mustang 22-meter line put Stanford on the front foot. Quick ball from scrumhalf Vivian Studdert '28 found captain Leila Wang Gaouette '26, who drew in two Mustang defenders before offloading to lock Zoe Colloredo-Mansfeld '26, who dove through for the try. The formidable efforts of this duo were showcased throughout the match, as both logged 80 minutes of nonstop work around the pitch. Feit converted to give Stanford a 19–14 lead.
Cal Poly went into halftime with a 21–19 advantage after pinning the Cardinal deep off the restart and regaining possession before the break.
The Cardinal made defensive adjustments at halftime, tightening their structure and raising pressure on the Mustangs.
Early in the second half, a strong Cardinal defensive launch forced a knock-on, and Wang Gaouette gathered the loose ball approximately 20 meters out. The prop showcased her acceleration and power, breaking through six tackles on her way to the try line. Feit converted for a 28–21 lead.
Despite several second-half efforts to find Journey Washingtonhigh '26 on the wing, the Cardinal were unable to connect with the senior flyer.
The next 30 minutes remained scoreless, with continued exchanges of possession. Stanford looked dominant in the set piece, while the Mustangs continued to showcase their power and pace.
In the 32nd minute, Davis secured her hat trick following dominant forward possession inside the Mustang 22. Chisa Ogaki '28, off the bench, converted the final try of the match to seal a 33–21 victory for the Cardinal.
Shoutouts to impact subs Ana Palacios '27, Nancy Bao '28, Jana Gomri '26, Emma Lewis '29, Chisa Ogaki '28, Karina Byzek '29, and Katherine Lai '26, who brought energy and fresh legs in a hard-fought battle.
Next weekend, we welcome Family and Alumni to The Farm for Senior Day & Family Weekend on February 21, 2026, when both teams will take on Fresno State. The women's match kicks off at 11:00 a.m., followed by the men's match at 2:00 p.m.
