Bruce Wonnacott began studying Aikido in 1991 at Central Illinois Aikikai in Urbana, Illinois. His first teachers there were Sherri Stern and Knut Bauer, both students of Akira Tohei Shihan. During that time, he also trained frequently with Mitsugi Saotome Shihan and Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan.

In 1997, he moved to California, where he began training with Frank Doran Shihan and Cyndy Hayashi Shihan. He has traveled extensively with Doran Sensei throughout the United States as well as internationally. He was promoted to the rank of godan (5th degree black belt) in 2019.

In addition to Aikido, he has studied karate, jiu-jutsu, and fencing, as well as yoga, chado, and several other related arts.
