Stanford Recreation

Giving

Alumni, friends, family, or other organizations may choose to give to the team. See below for guidelines on seeking out and accepting gifts to your team.

Our Director of Sport and Youth Programs works closely with the Development team in DAPER to follow donation guidelines. Thus, each team must work through the CSA for approval and assistance before contacting individuals to ask for donations, especially when approaching alumni or others not directly affiliated with its team. Clubs are encouraged to keep a running database of donor contacts.

How to Give - Athletics Development

Donations that go through DAPER or the Club Sport Program qualify as tax-deductible and will receive an acknowledgement from DAPER, then money will be deposited to a club’s development account. The Director of Sport and Youth Programs will let club officers of each team know of any donations that come through the Stanford Athletics Development Office. The information will include donor contact information so that the team can send an acknowledgement to the donor.

Donors can give directly through the Athletics website. The follow steps outline the process:

  1. Go to giving.buckcardinal.com
  2. Under Direct your gift, please select “Other Stanford Designation” at the end of the list
  3. Enter ONE of the designated Equestrian Fund titles and codes. More information on each fund can be found below.
    • Annual Student Equestrian Fund: GARDC
    • Stanford Horse Care Fund: GARDT
    • Student Equestrian Endowment: KRACE
  4. Complete personal and credit card information and finalize online gift process

For teams that have a development account – whether it be an expendable or endowment account – the funds will be transferred into that account. All other amounts that are not designated will be deposited into the general Club Sports Program development account. Stanford Athletics does NOT keep any percentage of these donations – the entire amount goes to the individual club or Club Sport Program.

How to Give - University Development

All gifts received outside of the DAPER Development portal must be processed by the Office of Development and will be deposited into a group’s ASSU 2800 - General Account. Teams cannot collect donations directly.

Donors can give directly through the university’s Office of Development website. The follow steps outline the process:

  1. Go to give.stanford.com
  2. Under Direct your gift, please select “Other Stanford Designation” at the end of the list
  3. Enter “ASSU: Stanford Equestrian Team - 7285
  4. Complete personal and credit card information and finalize online gift process

Club Sports encourages all teams to opt for directing their donations towards their ASSU 2800 General account via Stanford’s Office of Development (OOD) for greater financial flexibility.
Donations that go through OOD qualify as tax-deductible and will receive an acknowledgement from Stanford proper; the money will then be deposited to a club’s ASSU 2800 general account.

Donations will be viewable via reference numbers in the 2800 account deposit description. The information will include the donor name so that the team can reach out to the OOD and send an acknowledgement to the donor.

Other Ways to Give
Donors can give via pledges, phone, mail, or wire transfers as well. Instructions for those methods can be found at the bottom of the give.stanford.edu site. Donors MUST specify the designation as the Club Sports Team name wherever possible, ex: adding the team name to the check memo line.

Important Note Regarding ASSU
The ASSU CANNOT accept any direct donations on behalf of any team. All donations must be processed via the Office of Development (OOD). If a team receives a donation check, it must be forwarded to the OOD for processing. Once OOD processes the donation, they will send a journal transfer to ASSU specifying the team, at which point the funds will be deposited into the team’s 2800 general account. All questions regarding donations should be directed to the OOD.

Horse Donations

Every one of Stanford’s phenomenal horses is donated or loaned to the program by a wonderful owner looking for a beautiful home for their horse, impeccable care and a way to support the Stanford Equestrian Team. (All gifts to the program — including horses — are tax deductible).

Stanford looks for a range of horses from experience show horses to kind and patient teachers. All horses must be serviceably sound (Stanford has a Horse Health Care Fund that can cover regular maintenance like hock injections or Legend/Adequan) and, most importantly, safe. Horses in the program include:

  • 3' – 3'6" equitation horses
  • Children’s and/or Junior hunters
  • Quiet and safe jumpers
  • Short or Long Stirrup horses
  • Schoolmaster Dressage horses able to do at least 1st level
  • Western horses with rail, trail, Horsemanship and/or Reining experience
  • “Bombproof” beginner horses of any discipline

Please provide as much information as possible on donation offers including name, breed, age, training, any health issues, special needs and reason for donation. After a short trial Stanford is experienced in helping donors through the donation process (while the IRS requires all horses valued over $5,000 to be appraised for tax purposes the process is easy!).

For more information on horse donations please email Tina Davey.

Tack & Equipment

Stanford’s Equestrian Team is made up of 45 men and women who compete in Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Horsemanship and Reining, as well as Dressage. While Stanford appreciates a partnership with CWD and donations from Hermes that provides 6-8 show saddles, with almost 30 horses on the Team, finding enough adult-sized appropriate close contact Engligh, Western and Dressage saddles is difficult. In addition, everything from brushes to bridles, bits to boots are donated and put to great use.

Stanford also collects new and used schooling and show clothing to help outfit the many students who are on financial aid and/or showing for the first time. We are a non-profit program that survives on donations and student dues and the gift of tack and clothing is appreciated! All donations are tax-deductible.
