On June 3rd, the Stanford Figure Skating Club (SFSC) transported the lights of Broadway to Sharks Ice in San Jose for their end of year showcase. The current team and alumni skaters brought the energy to the rink as they skated to iconic musical theater. Each skater embodied their character through dynamic movement, rich storytelling, and the unmatched emotion and improvisation of live performances.
The night began with a powerful duet by SFSCÂ Co-Presidents
Elizabeth Hong and
Valentina Juricek skating to
Defying Gravity from Wicked. Freshman
Audrey Akkerman captured the audience's attention with
Maybe This Time from Cabaret. Next up was a poignant rendition of
She Used to be Mine from the Waitress by graduating senior
Janice Teoh and a dynamic skate by alumnus and honorary team coach
Jonathan Ko to Hercules. Another Stanford alumnus, Angela Luo, was spectacular in her expressive skate to the classic song
American Pie. Junior
Gia Mukherjee projected her infectious joy while skating to
Good Morning Baltimore from Hairspray. Graduate student
Kaila Coimbra continued the momentum with a fun skate to Mamma Mia, demonstrating her incredible spin technique.Â
Samantha Steeman, a M.D. student, performed the first of several songs from Chicago. Sam perfectly interrupted the role of Roxie Hart, showing off her wonderful ice coverage and beautiful edge work. Graduate student Jeuri Fang dazzled to
All that Jazz, with a smile that lit up the ice. The finale to
Cell Block Tango, choreographed by
Alea Delmastro, showed a sultry side of the SFSC women: Valentina, Alea, Audrey, Janice,
Rebecca Ye, and
Katherine Cao. The six merry murderesses of the Cook County Jail each justified their "crimes" with Jonathan and SFSC VP
Warwick Lloyd as willing victims! The encore performance, by former SFSC President and alumnus
Hannah Oo to
El Tango de Roxanne from Moulin Rouge, displayed Hannah's great skating speed and provided a dramatic climax to a wonderful night of skating. Â
Â
Friends and family members were invited on to the ice. Everyone had a blast during a special skating session hosted by the club. The event was also a final skate and goodbye to a number of graduating SFSC members
Sala Ba,
Jierui Fang,
Janice Teoh,
Rebecca Ye and
Xiao (Nathalie) Yu.
Special thanks to Stanford alumnus Beth Bottos for coordinating music and announcing, Keith Tharp for photography, and our volunteers who made this showcase happen. Thank you to Sharks Ice at San Jose for their facilities. Finally, thanks to the family and friends who attended and supported the skaters!
